Debunking Motor Oil Myths

One of the most persistent motor oil myths is that your car's oil must be changed every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. In fact, this generally is not necessary for many, if not all, vehicles. You can safely have your oil changed with less frequency.

Another myth associated with motor oil is that synthetic oil improves your fuel efficiency. In some ways, synthetic oil can be better for an engine overall. However, there is not solid evidence that it improves fuel efficiency.

Finally, a myth is that once you use synthetic oil, you must always use it. You cannot go to petroleum-based oil, according to this urban legend. In fact, you can go back and forth between these two types of oil.
