For some people it could be an all-round family vehicle, for others it could be a tool of their trade, and for others, it might just be a great big fabulous toy. But whatever reason you have for choosing a 2021 Ford F-250, this is a truck that's up for the challenge. While towing and hauling capabilities will always be the headline news for a truck like the F-250 Super Duty, the sheer versatility and flexibility should never be overlooked either. This is a vehicle as suited to towing and hauling east to west along highway 58 for work every day as it is for weekend trips with the family at Smith Mountain Lake.

Awesome power and capability

If you wanted a heavy-duty pickup in the past you'd usually be able to choose between a standard gas engine and a diesel alternative, but Ford has broken that particular convention by now offering a choice of two gas engines as well as a turbodiesel alternative.

The standard engine for all but the very highest trim level is a 6.2-liter V-8 that puts out a very healthy 385 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque, which goes to the rear or all four wheels through either a six-speed or a ten-speed automatic transmission. Rear-drive is standard but all models are also available with four-wheel-drive if you need the extra capability it provides for bad weather driving and trips into the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Next up is the optional gas powerplant, which is an awesome 7.3-liter V-8 which then puts a massive 430 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque at the F-250's disposal through that ten-speed automatic transmission. But if ultimate towing capability is what you really need from your new truck, the available 6.7-liter turbodiesel is the obvious answer with its 470 horsepower and monstrous 1,050 lb.-ft. of torque.

Huge flexibility and versatility

There are six different trim levels available in the 2021 Ford F-250 family, and this really is the area where you start to choose the personality of your new truck. The entry-level model is the XL, which is a relatively workmanlike model that still comes standard with far more than just the bare essentials. The XLT is the next model in the 2021 lineup, and this is probably the first model that will be considered by those wanting a pickup for more than just commercial purposes.

The third trim level is the F-250 Lariat, and then we get to the really swanky King Ranch, Platinum and the sensational range-topping Limited. Of course, you also have to choose one of the three available powerplants, rear- or four-wheel-drive, three cab configurations and two bed sizes. And after that you have colors, interiors, wheels and a massive options list to go through to build the F-250 that's perfect for your requirements.

Any way you want it

Even though you probably won't find too many base XL models on dealer lots, they still come standard with air conditioning and a SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen, 911 Assist, AppLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and 2 smart-charging USB ports. XL models also come with hill start assist, a rearview camera with Dynamic Hitch Assist and Trailer Sway Control.

XLT models add retail-friendly features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, power windows, and more available options than the base model such as a dedicated off-road package and towing camera packages. The XLT also piles on the standard active safety features such as Auto High-Beam Headlamps, Blind Spot Information System with Trailer Coverage and Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane-Keeping Alert with Driver Alert System and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking.
The Lariat trim level really ups the ante with standard leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, an 8.0-inch digital display within the instrument cluster and the option to upgrade further to a premium audio system, 20-inch alloys and power running boards. If that's the model that sits in the middle of the 2021 lineup, you can probably imagine how well-equipped the King Ranch, Platinum and Limited models are.
